Miranda Barbour, 19, told a newspaper she killed a man she and her husband met through Craigslist, and said she killed at least 22 others for a Satanic cult.


SUNBURY, Pa. — A woman charged along with her newlywed husband with killing a man they met through Craigslist admitted to the slaying in a jailhouse interview with a newspaper and said she has killed more than 20 other people across America, claims which police said they are investigating.

In an interview with The Daily Item in Sunbury, 19-year-old Miranda Barbour said she wants to plead guilty to killing Troy LaFerrara in November. She also said in the interview she has killed at least 22 others from Alaska to North Carolina in the last six years as part of her involvement in a satanic cult.

"I feel it is time to get all of this out. I don't care if people believe me. I just want to get it out," Barbour told the newspaper for a story published Saturday night.

Sunbury police Chief Steve Mazzeo told the newspaper that investigators were aware of Miranda Barbour's claims of involvement in other murders. He said they are "''seriously concerned" and have contacted police in other jurisdictions.

In a statement issued Sunday, the FBI's Philadelphia division said it had been in contact with Sunbury police and "will offer any assistance requested in the case."

Miranda Barbour's lawyer did not immediately return messages from The Associated Press left at his office Sunday. Mazzeo did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment left at his office Sunday.

Attorneys for Barbour and her husband, 22-year-old Elytte Barbour, have both sought psychiatric evaluations for their clients.

Miranda Barbour's attorney also asked a judge last week to toss out statements she made before she was charged. Public defender Ed Greco said in the motion that Barbour wasn't afforded an attorney despite repeated requests during two police interviews.

Barbour said in the jailhouse interview that she wanted to plead guilty at her arraignment, but that Greco pleaded not guilty for her.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for both defendants in LaFerrara's killing.

Miranda Barbour, a petite woman with long brown hair, told investigators she met the 6-foot-2, 278-pound victim after he responded to her Craigslist ad offering companionship for money.

Elytte Barbour told investigators they committed the crime because they wanted to kill someone together, according to court papers. The couple, who were married in North Carolina and moved to Pennsylvania about three weeks before the crime, told police Miranda Barbour stabbed LaFerrara in the front seat of her car while her husband held a cord around his neck.

Miranda Barbour said in the interview that she doesn't want to get out of jail and that she would kill again if released. She said she had no remorse and killed only "bad people."

Miranda Barbour offered little detail on the murders she claimed to have participated in in Alaska, Texas, North Carolina and California.

She claims she joined a satanic cult in Alaska when she was 13 before moving to North Carolina. Online records for the woman that the newspaper identified as Barbour's mother show her as having lived in both Alaska and North Carolina.

Days after Metro police raided four massage parlors on suspicion of prostitution, victims' advocates are sounding the alarm about sex trafficking.

"There are many foreign nationals who are brought over with a promise of a too good to be true offer. They think they're going to do some other kind of work and then they're forced into prostitution," said Derri Smith, executive director of End Slavery Tennessee.

It's estimated 94 minors are trafficked in Tennessee every single month, and most are young girls who are forced into prostitution.

But the group End Slavery Tennessee is on the front lines to stop this while providing care for victims.

"Some of these girls think these guys are their boyfriend and loves them even though they're selling them to people," Smith said.

Sheila Simpkins knows all too well the horrors of sex trafficking. She is now an intervention specialist for the End Slavery Tennessee and is a survivor of trafficking with the scars to prove it.

"I probably got beat once a week," Simpkins said.

Simpkins was brought into prostitution when she was just 14 years old.

Now, she's helping others.

"Because of my background, I'm able to make a connection with them and start building trust so that they know that there's help available," she said. "We can go to school. We can live productive lives. We can be wives. We can take care of our children."

Angered that her order had been botched by McDonald’s workers, the Michigan woman fired a single shot into the restaurant’s drive-thruwindow around 3:10 this morning,Grand Rapids police allege.

According to cops, after ordering at the drive-thru window, the 29-year-old Torres and another woman “complained that the order was incorrect.”  When a McDonald’s employee stepped away from the window, “one shot was fired from the suspect vehicle.”

Torres was reportedly upset because she expected bacon on the sandwich she ordered.

The bullet, police reported, entered the eatery at “head level” and “traveled through the window, across the dining room, and exited the restaurant through another window on the east side of the restaurant.” Nobody was hit, however.

Police impersonators strike again 

Investigators in Columbia are getting more concerned after two additional reports of police imposters stopping drivers on dark roads.

Christopher Dodson, of Franklin, said he was riding with his cousin Sunday evening near Carters Creek Pike and Nashville Highway in Columbia when they noticed blue lights behind them.

"It's kind of scary when people are out here getting beat up," Dodson said. "When my cousin, Donald, turned on the inside light, I guess they saw it was more than one person present inside the vehicle and they sped off."

That's when Dodson and his cousin saw that the car with the blue light was not police, but rather the bright yellow Camaro that has been involved in recent cases of police impersonation.

"I think they need to be caught and locked up, because it's not right to impersonate a police officer by no means," Dodson said.

What makes matters worse, Dodson's cousin's 5-year-old son was in the back seat.

"He was a little bit freaked out himself for a 5 year old," Dodson said.

Two nights before, there was another reported attempted stop by the police impersonators in Columbia. This time, it was on Highway 43 near Highway 50, and officials said the near-victim sped up until he lost sight of the yellow Camaro.

"It's a very dangerous situation," said Columbia Police Lt. Joey Gideon.

Police say this makes four times in recent weeks that someone in a yellow Camaro has either pulled over or attempted to pull over another driver by using a blue light on the dashboard.

Last week, two victims in Maury County were robbed. One was knocked out cold after being hit in the back of the head, and the other one was robbed at gunpoint.

Police want these men off the street before things turn even more violent.

"I got an entire team of investigators committed to finding out who these people are and stopping any other occurrences," Gideon said.

Officers say law enforcement doesn't use one light on the dash anymore, and most unmarked law enforcement vehicles are equipped with multiple flashing lights.

And authorities say if you're not sure if a real police officer is trying to pull you over, turn on your emergency flashers and drive slowly to the nearest well-lit area.

Columbia police are sharing information gathered in the case with the Maury County Sheriff's Office and neighboring law enforcement agencies.

Authorities say the key in tracking down those police impersonators is finding that yellow Camaro. If you spot it, call your local police department.
