NEW YORK CITY — City schools are open Thursday after an overnight storm dumped about 2 inches of snow across New York with a mix of rain, sleet and as much as 14 inches of snow is expected to wallop the five boroughs for the rest of the day, officials warned.
City officials announced the schools decision about 10 p.m. Wednesday nightand warned residents to take extra precautions outdoors.
"Parents, as always, should exercise their own judgement with regard to their children. Safety is a top priority for the department," schools chancellor Carmen Fariña said in a statement.
She added that all school field trips are cancelled for Thursday.
"Roads will be getting considerably worse the next few hours as heavier #snow moves in. Allow lots of extra time if you must travel!" the National Weather Service tweeted at 5 a.m.
The worst of the weather was expected to hit right around the morning commute, dumping 2-3 inches per hour across some parts of the city, a National Weather Service spokesman said.
